POWER INVERTER may save $1.9tr on greenhouse gas emission

IF properly deployed and managed efficiently, report has revealed that Information and Communications Technology ( POWER INVERTER ) has huge potential of reducing global greenhouse gas emission by 16.5 per cent.

According to a report titled SMARTer 2020, the December 2012 edition by Boston Consulting Group (BCG),  POWER INVERTER  can help save up to $1.9 trillion yearly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The report noted that potential reduction is more than 16 per cent higher than the estimated saving in a study conducted about four years ago. The research identified Ericsson’s mobile money as a potential  POWER INVERTER -enabled solution for emission reduction.

Besides, the report indicated that large amounts of emissions are generated as a result of unnecessary travel to access banking services in Africa. This includes emissions from the use of private and public transportation and, in the long run, additional road infrastructure, grid tie inverter more public vehicles, and increased banking infrastructure requirements.

According to the report, Ericsson is taking the lead in providing millions with better access to banking services, which will significantly improve their standard of living and reduce banking-associated emissions.

Mobile money, the Boston report noted can also reduce travel needs within communities by allowing direct mobile bill payment. For instance, the electric company can charge consumers directly via their mobile devices, eliminating the need for the customer to travel to the company physically to pay the bill.

Mobile network providers play an active role in fostering the adoption of mobile money to contribute to emission reduction. Network providers have proven to be more accessible than banks; they are in a better position to leverage mobile money as a way to positively impact the environment,” said Ericsson Vice President and Head of Communications, Africa, Mwambu Wanendeya.

The SMARTer 2020 report explained that in Kenya for example, there are 6.5 million subscribers who currently carry out 10 million banking transactions per day, with an average value of $20. The calculated environmental impact is 22 kgCO2 per subscriber per year.

According to it, if this level of mobile money penetration and emissions reductions in Kenya holds for the rest of the continent, mobile money would reach 161.3 million consumers and would yield 3.55 Metric tons in carbon dioxide emissions reductions in Africa alone.

It stressed that  POWER INVERTER -driven solutions such as smart electricity  grid tie inverter s reap benefits at the national level, whilst others like mobile money can result in energy – and cost – savings for individual households and businesses.

The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo told The Guardian that some operators in the country are presently investing in alternative  power inverter  supply and other forms of energy, including green technology,  solar panel  among others.

Adebayo, an engineer said the investment was to ensure that there was no downtime and to curtail emissions from some of the base transceiver stations.

Indeed, Airtel Nigeria has inked a deal with Ericsson to upgrade 250 diesel- power inverter ed stations in Nigeria to Green-sites. An initiative designed to enable the company harness  solar panel  energy to operate its base stations.

The deal is expected to help the company cut down a considerable level of CO2 emissions and prevent network outages associated with inconsistent  power inverter  supply.

The company’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director, Mr. Deepak Srivastava, at the e-site regretted that non-availability of regular  grid tie inverter   power inverter  supply to sites across the country is responsible for over 70 per cent of down time, resulting in poor QoS.

For him, the Green-Site would go a long way in addressing this critical challenge even as his company was also exploring other options including a partnership with the World Bank to address the nagging issue of  power inverter  supply especially to the remote communities.

According to him, “even as we pursue the Green-Site solution we have in the last six months installed dual generating sets in 200 sites and installed high back up batteries in 600 sites. We are looking at deploying an additional high capacity back up batteries and 500 new generating sets”.

He lamented that in some other countries, operators are concerned with managing customer experience rather than keeping the sites up as is the case in Nigeria, where  power inverter outages, fibre cut and community issues have combined to undermine the integrity of the network quality.

He added that Airtel has built over 500 additional sites in the last six months and intends to complete an additional 1000 sites by March 2012.

He hinted on his company’s plans to grow its existing 4500km of fiber by 1800km, giving a total of 6,300km by March 2012. The initiative is expected to provide alternate and multipath redundancy and additional trunk capacity, and reduce the impact of fiber cuts on network availability.

Airtel also said it was replacing old Microwave radio links with modern high capacity equipment and a total of 150 hops are to be replaced by March 2012.
